To amplify Steinar's comment, late collisions are much more detrimental to
performance because the Ethernet MAC flushes the frame retransmit buffer
after the CD delay, which is = minimum frame size/bandwidth. Thus, the
backoff algorithm is not run and the frame is lost, which requires recovery
at layer 4 or higher.
