Some of the lamer switches only support port-based vlans, i.e. you
can segment the switch into multiple groups, but you need a separate
uplink for each group.

If you go onto the cisco website and look up the release notes for
the catalyst software, there's a table that shows what release a
given switch can be upgraded to and what it supports in the way
of vlans and/or trunks.
