The memory spec is apparently the same as that for the NSE-1, which
supports 256M in a single slot. A 256M DIMM from a 3-rd party NSE-1
upgrade kit worked ok, in a brief trial.

Of course there's no guarantee that some "generic" PC100 DIMM of
the same feature set will work, there are DRAM parameters beyond
counting and the Cisco implementation may or may not be tolerant.

That's where the 3rd party vendors justify their markup on the
cisco-specific memory. I've had "right spec" generic fail in a
NPE-300, so you have to weigh your options.

This particular issue would be more important if NPE-225's were
much cheaper, faster or if they were readily available on the used
equipment market. 8-)
