I've used hundreds of 2924XLs, and I've only ever had one hardware problem,
a switch, that, whilst running okay, had a hardware fault taking its
interfaces away. Finding no problem in the running config, the switch was
rebooted. No POST failure, but the switch has no interfaces, e.g. you get
this type of response:

switch(config)# interface FastEthernet0/1
                          ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Anyone care to buy a fully functioning IOS switch, oh, sans interfaces? :)
This switch had never been used but is out of warranty (doh).
