Guys,

The information that Cisco provided you is WRONG. I've done several modem
installation
on Cisco routers. Even though I am not an expert in this area, I think I
know enough about
OOB modem to give you a few tips.

Here is the configuration for connecting a US Robotics modem (sportster or
courier) to a Cisco router AUX port:

line aux 0
login local
password xxx (where xxx=alpha-numeric characters)
modem inout
transport input xxx (where xxx=all, telnet, rlogin, pad, etc...)
speed 38400 (recommended at this speed)
modem autoconfigure type usr_xxx (where xxx=sportster or courier)

Most US robotics modems come with DIP switches in the back. Power off the
modem and set the following switches as follows:
1) switches 1,3,5,8 down,
2) switches 2,4,6,7 up,
When the modem is turned back on, make sure that the light on the AA (Auto
Answer) indicator is on. It means that the modem is waiting for incoming
connection.

CAVEATS regarding modem configuration:
The router CONSOLE port can be connected to an external modem for remote
access just like the AUX port; however, for security reasons, this
practice is highly discouraged because the console port does not have the
flow control feature like the AUX port (DTR,DSR, etc...). Therefore, if
userA does not explicitly end his or her session, the next user
(userB) will be able to access the router resuming the session previously
established by userA with no authentication needed.

Let me know if you have questions.
