..the only downside is further development seems to have been iced for
some time, and I've given up hope of seeing support for MISTP/MST,
LACP/PaGP, etc.

3550-24 is L3 capable out of the box, AFAIK, EMI license just adds dynamic
routing. The closest equivalent to the current 3524XL is the 2950G-24,
which comes in less if you can get it w/ just the SMI license. However,
2950T-24 (gig copper) ends up at less than half_ the price if you include
GBIC's on the 3524 (*).

I haven't had a chance to dig into feature lists on the 2950 to see if
there's a catch, but it definately looks promising for the next round of
upgrades.
