I've seen a lot of funny business with machines as a result of virus
scans.  Every once in a while a new virus comes out that propagates
by probing some soft spot, and you see some unexplained stuff happening
as the infection instance rises, and machines start getting subjected to
hundreds of scans from infected systems. And it's not limited to routers,
either.
