I think this ignores time to repair.  If you don't have spare parts
around then a hardware failure could take a lot longer to remedy than
waiting for a telco to fix a downed DS3.

Also, that thinking doesn't take stress into account...
if the telco or provider has an outage (and by mgmt choice
you are restricted to one provider) then you can relax while
waiting for things to come back.   But when your box is down
then it's your problem.
