What you need, and really should have, is Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 by
Jeff Doyle. I believe there is a second edition with some corrections. I
waited too long to get that book because I was intimidated by the word
"CCIE" on the cover, but it should have been one of the first books I
bought way back when I was studying for the CCNA. This book does cover
many advanced topics but it begins by covering IP addressing, CIDR and
VLSM, and routing concepts, and it does so in a way that should be easy
to understand for people at all levels.
