The ECC on the NPE-400 won't deal with this?

We've seen 0xDEADBEEF becoming 0xDEADBEFB and somehow find its way into 
the PC (ouch, missing free()) :-) on as5300, hence me jumping to 
conclusions about the software.  though that is a whole byte...
