That really depends on the circumstances. The switch might be a hundred 
km away. Or the ports might all be used up.

A low-grade traffic sampling solution for this class of devices is not 
unhelpful; most other vendors have gone for sFlow, which even on low-end 
kit at 1:2048 sampling can tell you a lot.

Obviously if you need "full" traffic info you'll want a different 
solution. But there's a spectrum of applications for traffic visibility.
