I believe this would largely depend on your SIP
service provider. For example, if you ask Broadvoice,
the residential SIP provider, if they support G.729
they will immediately say no. Supporting transcoding
on a large scale requires a lot of DSP resources so I
can see why smaller outfits would refuse to support
anything else but G.711.
