I have a couple of inexpensive Wasp units like this:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=SEARCH&Ntt=wasp&N=200339&Ne=200000&Ntk=All&product_code=50118264&Pn=WCS_3900_CCD_Bar_Code_Scanner_with_PS2_Cable
They are $160 from CompUSA and probably cheaper from other sources. I
have the PS2 keyboard wedge version, but they have a USB version, too.
Since they wedge into the keyboard, they are OS and application
transparent, which is important to me since my CallManagers and Unity
are just about the only Windows machines within my realm.
Other scanners may offer this as well, but by scanning various
programming barcodes in the manual, you can specify which symbologies
are valid and set prefix and suffix strings. For my purposes, I took the
default suffix CR, but I've used Tab on occasion.
