Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do I need a secondary dns server?
A: You want to have (at least) TWO different DNS servers in two different physical
locations. This will help you if your primary dns server experiences a power
outage or some sort of problem related to network connectivity.
We are located in Chicago, IL. Avoid having your primary and secondary
servers being in the same metropolitan area (So anywhere in Chicago metro
area would be a bad choice if you decide to use our service).
If the location changes, we will send you a notice to the e-mail address on file.
Q: Why do you not provide primary dns?
A: Primary dns zone files require a large amount of "zone file" maintence
that we are unable to provide via a FREE service.
Q: What makes a good secondary server?
A: You want to read rfc2182.txt
Q: What do I add to my zone file for this to work?
A: Good question, you would add a line after your SOA record
that says:
IN NS puck.nether.net.
You do *NOT* need to add an IP address of our system to your zone files, but you should permit zone transfers from IPv4 204.42.254.5 and IPv6 2001:418:3f4::5. The software will alert you if we are unable to transfer, and may not allow the addition of the domain.
Q: Do you support IPv6?
A: The nameserver software and IP stack support IPv6. IPv6 transfers will come from 2001:418:3f4::5.
