One thing to keep in mind when you're trying to sort out symptoms is
that negotiation does not happen continuously. It happens only when
the parties see the link change state. Some erratic behavior starts
to make sense in that light. It's sorta like those pesky switches
in the back of old ASCII terminals. They were only read at power-on.

That said, autonegotiation was not one of the IEEE's finest hours, IMHO.
Your conclusion that because your workstation works with 3com, it must
be OK flys in the face of lots of experience with compatibility problems
generally. Proper operation is not evidence of proper implimentation.
