I believe the GBICs are standard regardless of vendor, but not all Cisco kit can do copper - we were looking at this a while ago for a customer, running GigE on copper into Cisco kit (a 7206 or 6500, I forget which) bit according to cisco.com it wasn't supported. I guess the firmware predates 1000BaseT.

If one wants to, there are real copper GBICs from other vendors.

I have seen versions with an external RJ45 connector as well. These are
true GBICs as far as I have been told.
