I do not believe that this is completely accurate. There are fabric enabled cards other than OSM modules, such as the 6816 16 port gig card, that make full use of the switch fabric module. These
will not use the processor or bus Backplane at all. Also, if you insert a non-fabric enable card, it will not reduce the performance between fabric enabled cards, however speeds to and from the
non-fabric enabled card will be limited by the processor and bus backplane speeds, either 15mps or 30mps depending on the card.

The 7600 is an 6500 in all respects. Here are the some of the gotchas.
The key to the 7600/6500 is the capability to insert a couple switch
fabric cards and use OSM's for the full 256GB backplane capability for
full wirespeed cruising. Here's the gotcha, if you put any non OSM
cards into the chasis all cards, EVEN OSM's, will step down to the
slowest cards backplane speed.
