I agree...there are other problems as well (such as router reloads after
doing some normal show commands if an if-con session is present).

If you need to get VIP stats, use `show controllers vip <slot#> tech' as
a workaround. You can use the output modifiers or save it to a file for
easier reading. At least this way you will reduce your chances of a bug
or other problems causing crashes.
