        The theoretical limit on Ethernet and FDDI is indeed 255. I think it
        comes from the fact that currently only 255 MAC addresses are
        reserved for HSRP. Not all hardware supports this many groups (due
        to hardware limitations and MAC address filter reprogramming
        overhead) and sometimes the MAC address filtering is implemented in
        software.

        Token ring interfaces have no freely programmable MAC address filter
        so token ring uses three functional addresses for HSRP. Thus the
        limit is three.
