I missed it... are you using the boot-helper image and running the tftp
instruction? The newer versions of 5.x are too big to write directly onto
the floppy.

Also, I didn't see if the other question about 4.4 was answered... I think
4.4(7) fixes most of the issues in 4.4... at least the fixup smtp bug that
was reported was covered.

checksum error is an error in the image. Download a new image and use a
new floppy to make your binary. I moved from 4.4.x to 5.x w/o a problem on
520's w/32MB and 16MB flash
