Finally something I can answer!

Basic Stats:

2900XL - 24 ports 10/100, 3.2 Gbps Backplane, 64 VLANs, Embedded RMON for History, Events, Alarms, and Stats.

3500 - 24 ports 10/100, 2 ports GigE, 10 Gbps Backplane, 250 VLANS, Embedded RMON for History, Events, Alarms, and Stats.

Neither has Layer 3. If you want Layer 3, Look at the Catalyst 2948G-L3. It's a nice box for a good price.
