An "L3 switch" is a marketing buzzword for a "fast router, sometimes with
less than full features".

For example, the Cisco L3 catalysts had serious problems with access
lists (seems to be fixed now) and still can't do ip accounting (a thing
that all cisco routers do just fine). But they are fast...
