What's an efficient way to bond 2 x T1, aside from an external hardware
mux?

When I say bonding, I don't mean equal cost multipath...

How much CPU does MLPPP over 2 x T1 take, say on a 3640?

Is the protocol overhead more or less than say, 2 x T1 ATM bundling on
a NM-4T-IMA ?
