I don't pretend to understand why things cost what they do, but
note that a GE-IP+ built on a VIP4-80 core costs LESS than a
VIP4-80 bought without any port adapter. Now Cisco probably
has good competitive reasons that they want the GE options for
the 75xx to come in at particular price, and they want that
without reducing the cost of the VIPs. So they change the
software in the VIP so it loses its ability to be general
purpose thing, and then they can sell it for less without
canabilizing their other sales.
Or maybe not.
