How does the following text sound?

        For the purposes of backward compatability, any new
        routing and addressing architecture and protocols MUST
        work with IPv4 and IPv6 using the traditional "hop by
        hop" forwarding model. However, the architecture need not
        be restricted to this model. Additional forwarding models
        MAY be added.
