HQ-170 Sorta Works

I cleaned all the switches on my Swan-500, and now it works much
better, except when it gives a loud pop and goes deaf for a while.
Not a great radio for listening to CW.
Emboldened by this success, I cleaned up the switches on my HQ-170.
Now it remains deaf until after five minutes of warmup, and then the
calibrator shows up on all bands. The S-meter with the calibrator on
reads about S-5 on 40 meters, and signals come in quite nicely. Compared
to the Swan, well...the Swan has been retired.
The HQ-170 is partially deaf on the rest of the bands. The calibrator
can be heard, and on some bands twitches the S-meter by as much as 1 S-unit.
I haven't been able to pull in a signal anywhere except 40 meters, though.
On 160 meters and 6 meters, the calibrator positions did not seem to
correspond to 100kHz multiples. On these two bands, the calibrator did
not move the S-meter at all.
Are there any per-band adjustments I can safely make, using just the
calibrator & S-meter, in order to improve the reception? I want to
avoid anything requiring actual equipment or know-how I completely lack.
What kind of S-readings should I expect from the calibrator on a
properly adjusted HQ-170?
