Then the editor would trash the accompanying Burpee tape, run into the
typesetting dept, waving a stream of yellow print-out. We Linotype
operators would usually have only moments to get it set into type, as
these stories seemed to break just before deadline. We had two Model 8
Comet Linotypes with Fairchild tape units but they were usually busy
setting a week's worth of "Dear Abby" or something such, and besides,
the editor knew he had a better chance of getting his story into type
with human fingers on the keyboard.
Ahh, for the good ole days of hot type! Thanks for conjourning up the
memories.
