Ken, I wonder how many crystals have you tried?
THis MAY be due to a rock that is just reluctant to start, or perhaps
even the TYPE of rock may require a different parallel capacitance.
Most are rated for 32 pF but some require a different value.
You might try using atrimmer cap of say 50 pF for the rock and
then adjusting it for the best note. That will often correct chirp
problems with xtal oscillators.
The other possibility is an RF feedback that is somehow getting back
into the crystal but not affecting the VFO.
