DDD SOS

The DDD SOS is a prosign used by a ship or shore station in relaying a
distress call for a distressed station. While perusing the old and new
regulations from the 1959 ITU Geneva Radio Conference, I was suprised
to see they specified that the DDD be sent as a single character:
___ ___ ___ ___ ___
DDD SOS SOS SOS DDD, i.e., the first and last are _.._.._..

Well, this is contrary to all the DDD SOS's I had ever sent while
employed at NMO, and contrary to what we were taught at Coast Guard
Radio School in '76; our textbooks and operating manuals were the (latest)
ITU manuals.

I'm hoping someone who was employed as a maritime radio op between '59 and
'76 can explain when and why ___
                                  DDD became DDD.
