Here's something you might want to see. It's a gas.

Illustrations in an ad that show
a "radio telephone" set-up from 1914.

The operator has to yell into this big megaphone
which, given the texts I have in my library, is
pointed at a honking carbon mike directly
in the antenna circuit.  Caption says he can only
talk a short time to prevent "overheating."
