What is it???

I've discovered a dusty Mil Surplus unit in the top of my garage.  I'd
forgotten all about even having it.

Rectifier Unit, Signal Corp, R 42A  Typical olive drab panel color.

It has a voltage adjustment and a milliammeter and a voltmeter on it.
It's obviously an adjustable power supply.

Anybody know anything about this unit and whether it's part of some
equipment configuration or just a stand alone unit?

If you think you know about it but need more info I can haul it down and
take a picture of it.
