True if you get hard-cover rebinding.
However, I've used the local Kinkos (tm)
copy store to rebind lots of books.
They straighten all the pages,
slice a wafer-thin cut to remove the
old spine and align the pages and
apply a "tape" binding. I've been
very happy with the results and it's
inexpensive.

It's all a matter of how important a book
is to you. A truely "rare" book should
be hard-bound at a bindery which can be
recommended by your local librarian.
A Handbook can be returned to service
with tape binding.
