Memory lane time....!
While others have fond memories of Allied, Burstein-Applebee, etc., I remember
going into Morrison's Radio Supply in Ashtabula, OH in 1956 looking for some
radio-control equipment for a model plane I was building - and walking out
bitten by the ham bug!
The counter man was Dick Emerson - W8UDH - and he steered me to the amateur
radio section (yes, even small town stores had a ham section). I saw the
latest Hallicrafters, Hammarlund and National receivers - and E. F. Johnson
transmitters, both factory wired and in kit form. I actually built my Ranger,
and then my Valiant, from EFJ kits.
Later, I went to college in Cleveland and discovered Pioneer Electronics. I
found that Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University)
once had an amateur radio club and the license (W8EDU) was still active. I
worked with Pioneer to get a quotation on the "brand new" Collins S-Line and
attempted to get the funding from the college to reactivate the ham club.
That's when I first found out what "bureaucracy" meant - the club was finally
reactivated a few years later!
My first experience with the S-Line in 1959 led to my love of Collins
equipment. Pioneer moved to larger quarters and expanded their amateur
department into a real attraction for local hams - but that's where George -
KE8RN - can take over the Pioneer story if he wishes.
