D-104 Microphone Xtal Element.

These are Rochelle salt crystal elements.  Temperature extremes,
high humidiy and just plain age cause them to deteriorate over time.
Generally they don't go dead unless they've been grossly mistreated,
fracturing the crystal element.  Its typical that the audio response
deteriorates, getting weak and "tinny" in character over time --
usually a VERY long time if the mic has been well cared for.

But ....
Its not uncommon, to find many hamfest variety D-104's to be in lousy
shape -- they've been bounced all over creation in poorly sprung
vehicles, dropped and tossed in boxes full of stuff, set out on the
roof of a car in a hot summer hamfest fleamarket, rained on, etc.  You
get the picture.
