Outside the US, yes. As you are aware, though, after 80 years of
continuous monitoring, the USCG went QRT on 500. But, some US
commerical shore stations are still monitoring 500.

I had an idea about a year ago - once 500 is completely vacant,
we petition the FCC and ITU to turn it over to us for amateur use,
keeping the silent periods, and keeping 500 as a calling freq'y.
Maybe we could get 425, 454, 468, and 480 kc as QSO (or "working")
frequencies. Bob Keys gave reasons against this, but I can't recall
them off the top of my head (I believe he mentioned that some
frequencies *above* 500 will be kept for the maritime service
broadcasts (e.g., 512 kc).

We need some advice from folks currently working in the maritime
field.
