Some 400-cycle Transformers Relabeled?

Dave,

In general, transformers will often work fine "up" in line frequency,
but not "down". Don't ever try to run a 'Mil' 400Hz unit on 60Hz. It
will instantly go into saturation, get hot, and cook. That was the whole
point of 400Hz aircraft systems. To reduce size and weight of inductive
components (including generators) by using the higher frequency which
needs less copper and steel. The two transformers in question may be the
same, or there might be subtle differences in the windings, core steel
alloy, potting; and likely in testing. GOOD transformer design is as
much 'black art' as 'science'.

Best regards,
Fred
