What about mods to some of the existing receivers of decent quality out
there, not major hacks but reasonable mods?

I am getting a Yaesu FRDX-400SD that seems to have decent filtering and
is designed for SSB, CW, AM and FM.  Anyone checked this one out?

Also, if the audio circuitry is bogus-beyond-reasonable-repair, what about
tapping early in the audio and shipping the output to a small hi-fi stereo
amp?
