R-390 purchase

I'm considering the purchase of an R-390 from one of the surplus
catalogs.  They are advertised without covers and without the VU amd
signal strength meters.  I asked the vendor why the meters are missing
and the reason is that the government removed them beacuse the meters
used radium on the indicators and they are considered hazardus.  So if I
purchase one, there is a replacement available for the signal strength
meter but not the vu meter.  Are there any of these meters available so
that I dont have to look at two holes in the receiver?  Had anyone else
purchased one of these and how was your experience? Thanks for the BW
