I have never personnaly owned one, but I can reveal that I have wanted
one for years. However, after some of the discussions I have seen,
there seem to be a few problems with it. Basically, it is like the
R-390 in that it is very quiet and has really good sensitivity. The
problem as I understand it, was that it was designed in an emerging
germanium world, by tube engineers. The signal levels are very low,
thus all the switching must be perfect. This means a lot of De-Oxit
and cleaning. Some of them are temperamental, and will work
sometimes, and sometimes not. I decided to pass on quite a few of
them that were $500 at the time. It sure did look good at Harvey
Radio in NYC in 1965 or so though. I just didn't have #3000 at the
time. Anyway.... do what you will, but be prepared to do some work on
it before it will operate the way it should. Unless you find one
brand new in the box!!!!
Have fun,
Cory/N2AQS

I am interested in (maybe) picking up a National HRO-500. I know absolutely
nothing of this radio other than it seems to be one of the neatest receivers
I have ever seen.
Is the performance really indicative of the high price tags these are
commanding?
Any better than a 51J-4 or 51S1?
Could use your opinions.
Any known mods that "need" to be done?
