Firing up stored boatanchors

  I've seen mention of using variacs to power up old
boatanchors. I'd like to get some more input on
suggested techniques for doing this, and what to watch
out for. I have some old rigs in unknown condition and
dont want to burn the house down, or even worse, damage
the radios!

  Also, I've seen mention of reforming capacitors. What
exactly does this mean, and how is it accomplished?

( Have electronics experience, mostly 5 volts and
under, have respect for anything higher... )
