Help on Howard 440

I am working on a Howard 440 and seem to be up against a wall. The
receiver is functional but I seem to have a problem in the audio section
that I can't figure out. Audio is muffled and distorted as you increase
the a AF gain and than goes away.Like maybe the tube is being driven into
cut-off?? Plenty of signals so I believe the problem is in the audio
section. Audio output is a 6V6 driven by a 6Q7. Schematic is very
confusing and very difficult to follow (typical 30's schematic) and
doesn't seem to totally jive with radio.

Any suggestions

Thanks and 73,

Dave N7RK
