Negative grid current reading

My Valiant 1 shows a negative grid current reading when switched into the
grid current position. This occurs even with the drive pot turned all the
way counter clockwise with no drive. The Osc shows positive reading and so
does the buffer show positive current reading.
The troubleshooting section of the manual says negative grid current reading
is due to excessive drive to the final tubes. This can't be the case as the
drive pot is turned all the way down (off). Any Valiant ghrus out there who
can shed some light on the problem? 73, John, K5PGW
