Hammarlund HQ 180XE problem

Just acquired a Hammarlund HQ 180xe. Seems to WORK WELL.......EXCEPT.....when in SSB/CW mode and the AGC is switched into slow or medium positions a loud beat note,that is variable with the BFO control, appears in the audio output and is visible on the S meter. The beat note is not present in "fast" or "off" AGC positions or in the "AM" mode.

Sounds like the BFO signal is getting through as a beat note and not being cancelled out in the product detector. I am not sure why this is happening. Anyone ever experienced that problem? Would appreciate the benefit of your knowlege and experience. Thanks for your assistance. 73, John, K5PGW
