a question on RF Chokes

Phil,
You don't say much about what the choke is used for, both its original
application and what (if different) you are doing with it now. Obvious
possible causes might be too much DC current or too much RF. Too much RF
current can result from operating the choke at a lower frequency than for
which it was intended, IE: modifying an 80 meter amplifier for use on 160
meters. Likewise, if the choke is used for static discharge or ground safety
on the output of a transmitter it will overheat if it's inductive value is
too small for the frequency or power level that you are running. If you are
using it to feed a tube RF amp, bad bias on the tube, possibly caused by a
leaky coupling cap in the grid circuit, might cause the tube to draw too
much DC. You should see that on your plate current meter.
