if you have a signal gen and an oscilloscope you can test crystals. Run
the sig gen through the crystal to the input of the scope. When the Sig
Gen hits the freq of the xtal, it will pass the signal. After a while,
when you've checked several crystals, you will develop a sense of what
is good and what is bad. A good, very active crystal will cause the
scope display to peak and bounce where a soft crystal will have no
bounce and not a good peak. Try it, you'll like it.
