Old Resistors

In sorting out my collection of assorted old carbon comp resistors,
I've come across some with a ceramic rather than the more conventional
brown phenolic outer surface. I know I've seen these in equipment but
I can put my finger neither on the application nor the time frame. If
someone has any info or can direct me to it, I'd greatly appreciate
it.

Meanwhile, I have some odd sized ones with the more common phenolic
casing but of sizes I can't identify. For example, one type is about
the length of a 1/2 watt carbon comp but the diameter of a 1 watt one.
While some of the odd sizes I can find in the 1936 ARRL Handbook, I
can't find others and it would be nice to be able to find reference
for them. Any ideas?

And finally, any help in determining the power ratings for large
dogbone resistors would be appreciated as well.

Much thanks.

Best regards,

Michael, WH7HG
