In North America you'll be able to get pine resin from the nearest tree. Dissolve some in ethanol/methylated spirit and there's your solution...

(in Australia wattle gum won't work as well, but we have enough introduced P. radiata around)

That sounds like a good solution (pun intended)! Where did you get it from? I can only find a pasty substance for solder prep.
