[Boatanchors] Steam cleaning chassis

Has anyone tried steam cleaning aluminum chassis and had good success? I'm aware of several chemical-based methods but wondered if a hand-held steamer would do as well without the chemical side effects e.g. skin contact, inhaling fumes, etc.
