[Boatanchors] Printed Matter Still Cheaper at the USPS ?

This topic seems to come up every couple of months.  

People just don't believe that the Post Office can be so restrictive!

Here are the regulations concerning Media Mail, Library Mail, etc.

Doing a "Google" on Media Mail turns up all sorts of discussions of the advertising restriction on quite a few discussion forums which have absolutely nothing to do with amateur radio.  Basically, everyone is astonished that the Post Office basically does not allow advertising in items sent by Media Mail.  There are a couple of exceptions having to do with future editions of books and post cards inserted in books.  However, all advertising of products, except editions of books published by the book publisher, is prohibited.  

Again, I think that this policy, where advertisements that are decades old are concerned, is asinine.  Unfortunately, the "powers that be" don't agree with me!

You have been lucky!  At a lot of Post Offices these days they are actually opening the package to confirm that magazines, etc., are not included! " Technical Journals" that include advertising are definitely prohibited from Media Mail.  The Postal Inspectors are also "spot checking" Media Mail at various sorting locations.  Penalties range anywhere from delivering the items as "postage due" to substantial fines to the sender.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to the penalty assessed in any particular situation.

Rejecting advertising that is decades old is asinine.  However, you have to remember that you are dealing with a governmental agency (even though the Post Office is supposed to be "independent", they are still a governmental agency), and many regulations have absolutely nothing to do with common sense!

Remember, human beings have 7 senses:  The normal sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.  Then there are also "common sense" and "horse sense".  Unfortunately, these days the last 2 seem to be increasingly rare!

I've shipped at least 30 bundles of old QST, 73, and CQ magazines by Media
Mail. I am always asked what they contain, and I always answer truthfully
"technical journals".

If the post office wanted to refuse my Media Mail business I'd take them to
Fed Ex, but I have never had an problem, and I've shipped hundreds of
issues over the past five  years.
