I had an S-40B with a bum first IF can.  Is there a trend here?  

Insufficient sample size!! It was given to me, so I sold it as a parts
unit at a hamfest.

I've got a Halli S-40B with a bad first IF. Has anyone parted out one of
these and could turn loose of same. It needs to be from the "B" model.

Yep, it does have the 3/4"x3/4" cans.

  If your "B" model uses the small 3/4 x 3/4 or so IF xfmr you might
look at later models of the S-38, S-85, SX-99. etc.  as they all used
the smaller 455 kc IF xfmrs.
